Manual Ultrasonic on Cr 25% Super Duplex Weldments

REQUIREMENT

The UK based client had a requirement to perform manual ultrasonics on Cr 25% Super Duplex Weldments.

Forth Inspection Service was approached to develop the UT procedure & perform the testability trials in accordance with BS EN ISO 22825. ‘Non-destructive testing of welds. Ultrasonic testing. Testing of welds in austenitic steels and nickel-based alloys’.

SOLUTION

Manual ultrasonics using a combination of various transducers was selected for the testability trials. The weld caps were ground flush which permitted a smooth transition for scanning from the parent material over the top of the weld. The ultrasonic testing process used a combination of angle compression transducers for the weld body, shear wave for the weld bevel fusion face & finally creep waves for the cap & root areas.

A full testability trial was performed in accordance with BS EN ISO 22825, where numerous Cr 25% Super Duplex welded samples containing seeded defects were successfully inspected.
